Cruise Holidays To Alaska - Ketchikan
Overview
Ketchikan calls itself 'salmon capital of Alaska' and it's true that in July, the river is solid with leaping salmon. For northbound cruises, this is the first port of call in Alaska, and is a pleasant place to wander around, admiring the old wood-framed houses, today used as arts and crafts shops, galleries and cafes. Dolly's House is a former brothel, now turned into a museum. You can also walk the half mile to the Totem Heritage Center to see an impressive array of totem poles and carvings. Ships dock right alongside the small town.
Excursions from Ketchikan include fishing trips and salmon bakes, visits to the nearby Misty Fjords National Monument (a lovely area of wilderness) and various outdoor sporting activities. The town, is, however, a pleasure to explore independently and horse-drawn carriages line up at the dock.
