Cruise Holidays To Flam
Overview
The tiny village of Flam lies at the southern end of the Aurlandsfjord, one of the branches of the beautiful Sognefjord. The main reason to visit here is to take day trips into the fjords. There is a spectacular 40-minute rail journey from here, climbing nearly 3,000ft up a steep mountain gorge to Myrdal.
Flam claims to have Norway's oldest church (built in 1667) - and with its traditionally decorated walls also arguably the prettiest.
This is prime salmon country and some cruise lines run excursions up the salmon river Aurland, past Vassbygda Lake, where there’s a hydroelectric plant, the generators of which are cleverly hidden inside the mountain, and further on to the Wild Salmon Centre at Lærdal, which provides an insight into the life and legends of the Atlantic salmon, their migration and breeding, and the protection and management of wild salmon stocks.
