Cruise Holidays To Fuerteventura
Overview
Desert-like Fuerteventura is the least-visited of the Canary Islands when it comes to cruise ships. The island, off the tip of Lanzarote, is volcanic like its neighbours but only 60 miles from Saharan Africa. As a result, it's low-lying and arid, with ancient, dormant volcanoes, in contrast to fiery Lanzarote or the more humid Gran Canaria.
Cruise ships drop anchor off Puerto del Rosario, the main resort town, and tender passengers to the dock. Puerto del Rosario is a typical Canarian town, with whitewashed houses and some pleasant squares. It's also a bustling resort, with plenty of shops.
The main activity on Fuerteventura is basking on the gorgeous beaches, of which there are more than 150, many with soft, white sand and clear water. Cruise lines run shuttles to Corralejo and Caleta de Fustes, two big resorts, as well as island tours and 4x4 safaris into the unspoilt interior.
Fuerteventura is one of the world's prime windsurfing spots but beginners beware - winds are strong and a one-way journey to Africa is not out of the question!
