Cruise Holidays To La Coruna
Overview
La Coruña is one of several Spanish cities to claim it was founded by Hercules. Today it is a stylish Galician city with gorgeous cafes and a wonderful Roman lighthouse. Many of the buildings in the Old Quarter feature characteristic glazed facades that have earned La Coruña the name ‘City of Crystals’. The Jardines de Mendez Nunez and the Jardine de San Carlos are well worth taking time to enjoy.
Ships dock downtown, but visitors need to take a taxi to visit the Romanesque-Gothic Calle de Santa Maria Church which features and elaborately-carved door, dating from the 13th century. Also worth visiting is the Museo Arqueologico e Historico, situated in a 16th century fort.
Most visitors to La Coruña are heading for Santiago de Compostela and the revered 11th century Romanesque Cathedral, with its grandiose Baroque façade. This is the epicentre of one of Europe’s most famous pilgrimages and cruise passengers have to mingle with hoards of pious tourists from all over the world. Other sights include the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Sar; the Gelmirez Palace; and Los Reyes Catolicos Hotel.
