Cruise Holidays To Lanzarote

Overview

Lanzarote would certainly win prizes for the strangest of the Canary Islands, with its bleak, black landscape, the twisted lava flows encroaching on every aspect of civilisation. Tiny, white hamlets nestle among fields of black rock, and vines and tomatoes are grown in little pits in the ground, to protect them from the harsh wind.

Ships dock at Arrecife, the unremarkable capital. Things to see, all by excursion, include the Fire Mountain in the Timanfaya National Park. You climb up the mountain through a bizarre, lunar landscape, past coloured sand dunes where you can ride camels, to the top, where a guide demonstrates the geothermal power of the earth by stuffing a bush into a hole with a stick, and watching it burst into flames.

Alternatively, visit the Jameos del Agua in the north, a volcanic tube with amazing acoustics and an underground lake.

Closer to Arrecife is the Cesar Manrique Foundation, dedicated to the work of the famous architect, who was from Lanzarote here and built a spectacular house in a series of underground volcanic bubbles.
