Cruise Holidays To Madeira

Overview

MadeiraMadeira lies in the path of the trade winds, some 620 miles off the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Over the centuries the island has played host to voyagers passing between the Old and New Worlds. The sub-tropical climate has resulted in the island becoming known as ‘The Garden of the Atlantic’.

Ships sail into the capital of Funchal which has a sweeping harbour. From here it is a short walk or shuttle-bus ride into the quaint town which overflows with baroque buildings festooned with lavender jacaranda blossoms. Start your exploration at the Se (Cathedral) with its Moorish-inspired ceiling of carved cedarwood and ivory; then visit the Quinta de Cruzes Museum and the Botanical Gardens.

Excursions include a cable car ride to Monte to see the Church of our Lady; from here experience a thrilling basket sledge ride down to Livramento. Tours take you through vineyards and banana plantations, past the distinctive black and white twin spires of the Church of Santo António, glimpsing São Roque, en route to Pico dos Barcelos. There’s also the chance to see the small fishing villages of Câmara de Lobos and Riveira Brava.
