Ports of call don’t come any more glamorous than Monte Carlo, where ships dock at the new pier within walking distance of Casino Square. Call in at the new cruise terminal for maps and guides, and information on any galleries and shops offering discounts to cruise passengers.

Once you’ve admired the mega-yachts in the harbour, visit the beautiful Jardin Exotique, the casino itself (there is a dress code and you’ll need a passport to get in), the Oceanographic Museum and the changing of the guard at the Palace (11.55am, daily). The streets are crammed with designer shops and price tags to match.

Excursions operate to Menton, Eze, Nice, Antibes and Cannes, although most first-time visitors prefer to spend the day in Monaco itself.
