To get acquainted with the city, begin at its heart - Piazza Gesù Nuovo; visit the 16th century Gesù church; the cathedral of Santa Chiara; and the Castel Nuovo, dating from the 13th century.

Most popular excursions include Pompeii and Herculaneum, considered the world's finest example of ancient Roman towns where you can see huge forums and great temples, as well as homes and shops preserved in time by the devastation of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
