Cruise Holidays To Portimao
Overview
Renowned for its wildlife, Vila Nova de Portimão lies at the head of the Ribiera de Arade estuary, overlooked by two 15th century castles. It traces its origins back to a small trading port of the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians. It is believed to be the famous Portus Hannibalis named by the famous Roman general, Hannibal Barca.
Cruise ships anchor off this southern Portuguese port with tenders taking you along the Ria de Alvor, right into the heart of the Old Town. Here late 19th century architecture abounds with houses boasting wrought-iron balconies, ornate stonework around the windows and doors, balustrades of stone and tile-covered ceramics and walls.
As a gateway to many historic towns of the Algarve region, it is possible to visit the 12th century sandstone fortress at Silves; the mosaic floor of the Roman villa at Figueira; the fortress of Fortaleza de Sagres; as well as the beaches at Praia da Rocha; and Cabo de Sao Vicente. Tours visit the old village of Mexilhoeria Grande, with its 16th century church; the Roman archaeological site of Abicada; the Caves of Estombar; and the charming fishing village of Alvor.
