Cruise Holidays To Puerto Rico
Overview
San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico, was founded by the Spanish in 1521 and surrounded by massive fortifications that still exist today. The oldest part of the city contains two historic forts and the stately La Fortaleza, built in 1533 and today used as the governor's mansion. The cobbled streets are lined with beautiful colonial Spanish architecture and there are free trolley buses if walking becomes too much.
There is excellent shopping in the narrow streets of the old city, known as El Viejo San Juan, within walking distance of the cruise terminal, where most ships dock. Typical excursions include walking tours of the town and the atmospheric ports, visits to the Bacardi rum distillery (with tastings), and hikes in the nearby El Yunque rainforest. Some cruise lines also offer golf and 4x4 excursions.
