Overview

St Lucia is the largest of the Windward Islands, shaped like a mango and easily identifiable, thanks to the pointy twin peaks of the volcanic Pitons mountains. The interior of the island is a riot of tropical colour, bursting with flowers and exuberant Creole culture.

Ships dock at Castries, the capital, although most visitors head out of town on excursions to places like Marigot Bay, a chic marina; the fishing village of Anse la Raye, the Pitons and Soufriere, a ramshackle town at the entrance to a huge volcanic crater, where you can see the lava bubbling and, less pleasantly, smell the sulphuric gases. The magnificent Botanical Gardens and Diamond Falls are nearby.

Other excursions centre around sport - catamaran cruises, golf, diving, sea kayaking and 4x4 excursions into the island's interior.
