Busy St Thomas is the duty-free shopping epicentre of the Caribbean. Ships dock about a mile from the capital, Charlotte Amalie, where the vast Havensight Mall houses every duty- free retailer imaginable and American passengers stock up on cases of duty-free drink and cigarettes. In town, there are even more shops and some fantastic prices for jewellery and electronics.

You can walk into Charlotte Amalie, or take a taxi. Excursions on offer include Blackbeard's Castle (allegedly used by the famous pirate), helicopter tours over the island, day trips to the beaches, snorkelling over coral reefs and a sunken ship, or visits to neighbouring St John, two thirds of which is national park. The ferry takes 45 minutes and when you get there, there are 40 beaches to choose between. Trunk Bay, where there is an underwater snorkelling trail, is one of the best.
