Cruise Holidays To Taormina

Overview

TaorminaThe east coast of Sicily is considered to be the most magnificent. Situated 673 feet above the Ionian Sea with Mount Etna as a spectacular backdrop, the storybook town of Taormina is one of sculpted gardens, stately palaces and ancient monuments.

Cruise ships anchor off Giardini Naxos; from here it is a six mile drive to Taormina. The Corso Umberto is the town’s busy main street with designer boutiques. To the north lies the Piazza Vittorio Emmanuele, where there is an excellent view of the façade of the 15th century Palazzo Corvaia. Known for its stunning location, the Greek Theatre was reconstructed in Roman style in the 2nd century; with a diameter of 358 ft, it is the second largest theatre in Sicily, after Syracuse.

There are excursions to Mount Etna which pass vineyards and orchards before climbing the winding road up the slopes of the largest active volcano in Europe. The tours take you past the lava fields all the way to the Silvestri Crater, almost 6,000 feet above sea level. From here you can continue to an elevation of 7,500 feet via cable car which passes over the fuming crevices of this lunar landscape.
