Cruise Holidays To Tarragona
Overview
The ancient Roman city of Tarragona is a popular stop on the Cataluyna coast, the sandy beaches of the Costa Dorada extending for miles to the north towards Barcelona.
Outside the city, sandy beaches and small resorts back onto carob trees, vineyards, hazel and almond groves (beautiful in early spring) and olive trees.
The busy commercial port is huge, with several different quays. The inner basin is directly in front of the old city but cruise ships usually moor further away from the centre and shuttle buses are used.
There’s plenty going on around the inner marina basin, with shops and restaurants open late into the night, but most people come here for the Roman antiquities, dating back to the third century BC, when Tarragona was in its heyday. Walking tours of the city cover lots of steps and cobblestones, but it’s worth it to see the spectacular amphitheatre and the National Archaeological Museum, which houses an important collection of Roman artefacts. You’ll also see the old city walls and a two-tiered Roman aqueduct.
