Beautiful Venice should be on the must-see list of every cruiser. Ships dock at the cruise port, from which most cruise lines run a vaporetto (water taxi) service to the dock by St Mark’s Square, a scenic 10-minute ride. The walk takes about 25 minutes, if you don’t get lost in the maze of alleyways, although Venice is one of the loveliest cities in the world in which to lose yourself.

Popular excursions include walking tours of the city; gondola rides; tours of the Doges Palace (book a ‘Secret Passages’ tour and see where Casanova was imprisoned); boat rides to Murano and Burano islands; and tours to the Lido in high summer, for a beach day. Be sure to be on deck (or on your balcony) as the ship sails, for a bird’s eye view as you glide slowly along the main canal before heading across the often-misty lagoon.
