Cruise Holidays To Vigo

Overview

VigoModern Vigo, which dates from the 19th century, is Spain’s busiest fishing port and sits on the rugged west coast of the province of Galicia. The city we see today was built over both a Celtic Village and a Roman settlement. Best views are from the Castillo del Castro, built to defend the city, in the Barrio del Berbes (Old Town).

Ships dock right in the centre of town from where it is only a short walk to the quaint shops and excellent restaurants that specialise in the freshest of seafood. Here you can sample native oysters which come from sunken beds in Vigo’s ‘rias’ – sea-filled valleys for which Galicia’s coastline is renowned.

Most visitors to Vigo opt for an excursion to Santiago de Compostela and the magnificent 11th century Romanesque Cathedral, with its grandiose Baroque façade; other sights include the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Sar; the Gelmirez Palace; and Los Reyes Catolicos Hotel. Alternatively there are tours to the aristocratic city of Pontevedra with its paved streets and arched squares. Here you can see the Alamada Square; the ruins of Santo Domingo; Pazo do Concello; and St Mary’s Church.
